The first known printed reference to a “milkshake” dates back to 1885. It contained one part whiskey, ‘for medicinal purposes’.
‘Shakes’ got their name from being served in bars. If the customer enjoyed the specialty drink, he shook hands with the bartender. If not, the bartender wouldn’t get a tip.
The first diner milkshakes were made with a mixture of milk, malt and a flavoring(vanilla, chocolate, etc.). The malt added an ‘ice cream’ texture to the drink.
The electric blender was invented in 1922 JUST for the making of milkshakes.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
1 cup Farmer's All Natural whole milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
1. Make sure vanilla ice cream and milk are completely cold.
2. Place the cold vanilla ice cream and Farmer's All Natural whole milk in the blender.
3. Add in vanilla extract.
4. Blend for 20 to 30 seconds.
5. Divide between two very cold glasses.
6. Top with whipped cream.
